DescriptionA scarab-shaped seal carved from steatite. The back is notably higher in the prothorax region. Pronounced nicks or notches at the sides mark the separation between the prothorax and the elytra (wing cases), but there is no dorsal suture line dividing the elytra themselves (plain back). The legs are carved in relief as "prettily curved lines" without striations, yet the three pairs are clearly differentiated. The object is pierced lengthwise. The original green glaze has largely deteriorated to a brown or light brown color, though traces of green remain in the depressions between the legs, on the right elytrum, and within the oval inclosing the design on the base.
Label TextThis scarab features a beautifully executed geometric design of interlocking spirals or "scrolls." In ancient Egypt, such continuous lines symbolized the concept of eternity and the interconnectedness of life. The craftsmanship is exceptional; the artist perfectly adapted the complex coil pattern to fit the small oval base of the beetle. Originally covered in a bright green glaze, traces of color can still be seen in the carved depressions. It was used as a personal seal and a protective amulet.
