DescriptionThis cast ribbed bowl is made from deep cobalt blue glass. It is broad and shallow, with a nearly vertical rim slightly turned inward and edged flat. The side tapers diagonally to a slightly concave base. The exterior is decorated with sixty-six short, irregular, and obliquely arranged ribs encircling the middle of the body. On the interior, four narrow grooves are cut into the surface: two run in a band at the junction of the side and bottom, alongside numerous abraded lines, while two small concentric circular grooves sit at the center of the base.
The bowl was sagged into shape, then rotary-polished on the interior, rim, and upper exterior, with fire-polishing applied to the rest of the outside. The interior also bears cut decoration. This type of bowl was widely made and used throughout the eastern and western Roman Empire.
