Wesaam Al-Badry

Iraqi-American, born 1984
BiographyWesaam Al-Badry (b. 1984) fled Iraq at age seven with his family during the Gulf War to eventually relocate in Lincoln, Nebraska. His immigrant status and prior experiences living in refugee camps has shaped his documentary photography and multimedia art practice that investigates social norms and issues of representation.

Al-Badry holds a BFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute (2018) and is currently pursuing an MA in Journalism from UC Berkley. In addition to exhibiting his work at galleries across the United States, he was selected to participate in the de Young Museum’s groundbreaking Fall 2018 exhibition, Contemporary Muslim Fashions, which will travel to Frankfurt’s Museum Angewandte Kunst in 2019. He has also worked as a photojournalist for CNN and Al-Jazeera America and his images have been featured in campaigns for the UNHCR and the ACLU, among other global organizations. Al-Badry is represented by the Jenkins-Johnson Gallery in San Francisco.
