Xiaoze XieChinese, born 1966
Xiaoze Xie (Guangdong, China, 1966) is the Paul L. and Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University. Previously, he taught at Bucknell University from 1999-2007. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Tsinghua University in Beijing (1988) and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Central Academy of Arts and Design, Beijing (1991) and the University of North Texas (1996). He currently divides his time between Palo Alto, California and Beijing.
Xiaoze is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant (2013) and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2003). He exhibited in several solo exhibitions, including the Asia Society Museum, New York (2019-20); Denver Art Museum (2017); The Modern Chinese Art Foundation, Ghent (2007); and China Art Archives and Warehouse, Beijing (2003). In 2010, the Samek Art Gallery at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA organized a mid-career survey, Amplified Moments, which traveled to the Knoxville Museum of Art, TN; Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon; and Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, ME. Among the numerous group exhibitions he has participated in are the Anren Biennale, Chengdu, China (2017); Liberating the Past from the Present: Contemporary Art in China at Shengzhi Space, Beijing and Modern Art Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia (2015) and Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art at the China Institute Gallery, NY; Seattle Asian Art Museum; and Honolulu Academy of Arts (2006-08).
His work can be found in a growing number of private and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; Denver Art Museum, CO; Boise Art Museum, ID; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, AZ; San Jose Museum of Art, CA; and Oakland Museum of California, CA.
Xiaoze is represented by Chambers Fine Art, New York and Beijing; Talley Dunn Gallery, Dallas; Anglim Gilbert Gallery, San Francisco; and Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Toronto.
