Jacob Hashimoto (b. 1973, Greeley, CO) is best known for using traditional Japanese methods to create large-scale “tapestries” out of thousands of hand-crafted paper and wood kites. He received his BFA in 1996 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he began to create the kites found in much of his work. His site-specific installations include his most recent at Studio la Città, Venice, Italy (2019), SITE Santa Fe (2018-19), Crow Museum of Asian Art, Dallas, TX (2018-19) and St. Cornelius Chapel on Governors Island, NY (2018). He has also been honored with solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome, Italy; Wäinö Aaltonen Museum, Finland; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Nevada Museum of Art, Reno; among other museums and galleries. Hashimoto’s works can be found in a growing number of public and private collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Tacoma Art Museum, WA; Saastamoinen Foundation-EMMA, Espoo, Finland; University of Houston, TX; and the University of Chicago, IL.
