DescriptionThe seal’s design features a horse, a cartouche, and a baboon in a gesture of adoration. On the scarab-shaped reverse, the back is rendered naturalistically, with two lines separating the elytra (wing covers). The seal is pierced lengthwise for suspension or attachment. The original glaze has faded, appearing light brown on the upper surface and whitish on the underside.
Label TextThis large scarab seal combines three powerful symbols: a horse, a baboon, and the royal name of Thutmose III. The baboon is shown with its hands raised in worship—not of the horse, but of the oval cartouche containing the name Menkheperre ("Lasting is the Manifestation of Ra"). The horse symbolizes strength and victory, while the baboon represents the greeting of the rising sun. Although Thutmose III ruled in the 1400s BCE, this amulet was likely carved centuries later. His name became a legendary "word of power" used on protective amulets for over a thousand years after his death, much like a saint's medallion.Possibly Hyksos, shortly before 1580 BCE
