THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST
Engraving on paper, about 1480-90
Frederick B. and Kate L. Shoemaker Fund, 1952.74
When Dürer set off in 1495 on his first Wandejahr (wandering year), it was Schongauer he hoped to see, but unknown to him Schongauer had already died. One of the reasons Dürer wanted to meet him is evident here, in the variety of crosshatching and other marks used to capture highlights and texture differences. Print collecting had become a less expensive way to collect art; artists began signing their prints, building on their popularity. Schongauer included his initials at the bottom of the prints so that collectors at that time (as well as today) could identify them.
