DescriptionJames Abbott McNeill Whistler American, 1834–1903 The Music Room Etching, about 1858 Gift of John Hogan, 1982.144 Whistler’s health had suffered during a trip to Northern Europe early in 1858. After the publication of the French Set, he returned to London and stayed with his family, recuperating under the care of his stepsister and brother-in-law, Seymour Haden. During this time Whistler and Haden often worked side-by-side on their respective drawings and plates, sharing subjects and compositions. It was a very productive time for both artists. The scene includes images of Haden, his wife Deborah, and Haden’s medical partner, James Reeves Traer. This print may have been intended as a study for a painting. Whistler was preparing to produce a painting that he would submit to the Paris Salon in 1859. While not a version of this scene, Whistler did utilize the Hadens’ music room for his painting At the Piano, currently in the collection of the Taft Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio.
