Of Whistler’s etching technique the artist/biographer Otto H. Bacher, whose artwork is also included in this exhibition, wrote:
“In etching he would get the essential lines, holding the copper plate in one hand, generally the left, and with the other he spun web-like lines of exquisite beauty—fascinating to see in the beginning as in the end. Where it required accuracy, he was minute. He used the [etching] needle with the ease of the draftsman with a pen. He grouped his lines in an easy, playful way that was fascinating: they would often group themselves as tones, a difficult thing to get in an etching.”
