DescriptionJohn Brown depicts the titular abolitionist standing at the center of the
print, his arms outstretched and his mouth open as if in mid-sermon
Works of Art for Consideration Toledo Museum of Art
with the wind in his hair and beard. A Black figure looks up at him in
the bottom left corner of the print. A tornado occupies the left
background, and covered wagons roll across the middle of the
composition. Deliberate mark making with similar qualities to pencil
drawings is characteristic of Curry’s lithography, and prominently
shown here.
