Matt Wedel
Matt Wedel
American, born 1983
on view in his first major museum exhibition Matt Wedel, Phenomenal Debris, exclusively shown at the Toledo Museum of Art, November 5, 2022 – April 2, 2023.
Wedel is the kind of artist that we admire for his endless energy for making. He is the artist that other artists seek to emulate. Born in Palisade, Colorado, Matt began working with clay at the very early age of 2. His father, a functional potter, introduced him to clay early in life and a craft focus continues to inform him today as a material-based artist.
Wedel attended the Art Institute of Chicago for his BFA. He received his MFA from Cal State University Long Beach where he worked with the renowned Tony Marsh. He has taught students of ceramics at schools around the country and has gained recognition showing at museums and art spaces from CA to Nova Scotia and internationally in France and Denmark. He has a robust presence on Instagram where he illustrates his life in the studio and his life around the studio, living and working on 10 acres in Albany, Ohio with his wife, Coral, also an artist, and his children whom he home-schools, Abner and Eleanor.
Wedel’s work is represented in collections at:
