DescriptionClear glass with trailed ribs on bowl. Plain ribbed foot edged with blue glass band. Trailed ribs have remnants of gilding. Under the rim is a band of gold, 'scale' ornament enriched with red, blue and white enamel dots.
Label TextLate 15th-century Venetian glass tableware was largely inspired by earlier metal forms. The mold-blown ribs on this large serving bowl, for example, recall fluted medieval Gothic vessels in silver and gold. Applied gold leaf and enameling underscore the rich appearance of the vessel. With its pincered and gilded ribs, this bowl was a particularly impressive vessel for showing off food at the table.Published ReferencesPage, Jutta-Annette, The Art of Glass: Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio, Toledo Museum of Art, 2006, p. 76, repr.
