Label TextIn the subject and composition of this night scene of a street in Saverne (a commune in extreme northeastern France) Whistler mimics the work of his French contemporary, Charles Meryon (1821–1868) whose print Rue des toiles à Bourges is hung next to this work. Whistler’s brother-in-law, Seymour Haden, actively collected prints by Meryon. Whistler is known to have studied Haden’s collection extensively.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Whistler: Influences, Friends, and the Not-So-Friendly, Feb. 26 - May 30, 2010.
