Label TextThis print, one of Whistler’s finest early works and released as part of the French Set, was based on a drawing and watercolor conceived at Lutzelbourg, an early stop on Whistler’s trip to Amsterdam in 1858. Whistler produced the actual printing plate after his return to Paris later the same year. The subject, a solitary figure absorbed in domestic work, was popular with Northern European artists from the time of Rembrandt. The composition, with a dark figure silhouetted against the light window and an open space receding into a narrow one, is also similar to known Northern compositions.Exhibition HistoryTMA show, Sept 12 - Nov 9 - 1999.
