Katsuyo Aoki

Japanese, born 1972
BiographyKatsuyo Aoki (born, Japan, 1972) is part of a late twentieth century and early twenty first century group of artists who have eschewed a modernist sensibility for work that embraces excessive ornamentation, self-reference, and historicism. Aoki began her studies at Tama Art University in Tokyo, where she received her BFA in painting and subsequently obtained an MFA in ceramics in 2000.

Aoki’s detailed works have been shown throughout Japan in solo exhibitions and in several international group exhibitions, including at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the RISD Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan, The Jeffrey and Carol Horvitz Collection, Massachusetts, and the Takahashi Collection, Tokyo, Japan. Aoki currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan
