Label TextEugène Verboeckhoven was one of the last in the tradition of realist painters of animals, which extended back to the 17th-century Dutch artist Paulus Potter and others. Verboeckhoven possessed an acute eye for the close observation of nature. He also had a skill for endowing his animals with distinct and seemingly individualized “personalities,” a quality evident in this appealing scene.
