Label TextThis small redware vessel comes from a tomb at Balabish, an important cemetery site near Abydos excavated in 1915. The jar dates to Egypt’s New Kingdom (19th Dynasty) and would have been included in a burial to hold food or drink offerings. Balabish provided archaeologists with a snapshot of everyday life and burial customs in a rural community. Though unadorned, objects like this were central to ancient funerary practice, ensuring the dead were nourished in the afterlife.
