Label TextThis red clay jar comes from a tomb at Balabish, a desert-edge cemetery in southern Egypt excavated in 1915. Balabish was chosen for excavation because of its potential to yield a wide variety of burial goods from different periods. This jar belongs to the New Kingdom (c. 1295–1070 BCE) and would have been used to store food or drink, either in daily life or as part of funerary offerings. Such plain vessels are important evidence for the everyday material culture of ancient Egyptians.
