Label TextProbably given as a gift for a wedding or betrothal, this goblet features the profile bust of a French soldier facing the profile of an idealized woman. The inscriptions between the figures bear the French words “DE BON LE” and “VOUS DONNE” (meaning “Given to you by a good heart”). Below the rim is a gilded band inscribed in Latin, DOMINE LABIA MEA APERIES ET OS MEUM ANNUNCIBIT (“Lord, open Thou my lips and my mouth shall announce [Thy praise]”).Published ReferencesPage, Jutta-Annette, The Art of Glass: Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio, Toledo Museum of Art, 2006, repr.
