Official portrait painter to three generations of the Bourbon monarchs of France (including the Sun King, Louis XIV), Hyacinthe Rigaud imbued his subjects with a sense of elegant superiority. This study for a finished, bust-length painting now in the collection of the Château de Parentignat in France depicts the painter Gabriel Blanchard (1630–1704). The son of the better-known painter Jacques Blanchard (1600–1638), Gabriel worked for Louis XIV as keeper of the royal collection. He was also professor and, later, treasurer at the Royal Academy.Published ReferencesRoman, J., Le livre de raison du peintre Hyacinthe Rigaud, Paris, 1919, p. 176.
