THE BIRTH OF ADONIS
Engraving on paper, about 1515-20
Frederick B. and Kate L. Shoemaker Fund, 1948.78
Trained by his father Bartolommeo, Benedetto Montagna was a painter and engraver. His pride in his work cannot be more plainly demonstrated than by the prominence given to his own name, placed in the midst of the empty sky. This reveals a willingness to intrude on the image for the sake of self-promotion.
