Label TextThe "Derome style" refers to a style of book decoration practiced by the Derome familt of France in the eighteenth century. The most famous of the family was Nicolas Dennis Derome (active 1761- ca 1789). In spite of the slightly-worn condition of these decorated gilt leather bindings, one can appreciate the symmetry and elegance of the lacy-looking pattern, called 'dentelle', which was inspired by embroidery. An essential feature in Nicolas Derome's finest book decotations is a small bird with outstretched wings, as can be seen in the patterning on these volumes.Exhibition HistoryBaltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD. 1957.
