Werner Pfeiffer

BiographyWerner Pfeiffer was born in 1937 in Stuttgart, Germany. He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. In 1961 Pfeiffer moved to the United States where he initially worked as a designer and art director. In 1969, Pfeiffer was appointed to Professor of Art at the Pratt Institute in New York. At that time he also assumed the position of Director of the Pratt Adlib Press. Pfeiffer began producing his own work as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker in the late 1960s. His artwork relies on a combinations of these artistic skills.


Pfeiffer's books, collages, drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures have been shown internationally in more than 100 group shows and in over 70 solo exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada, Chile, Columbia, France, Germany, Israel, Sweden, and Switzerland. His work is held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Guggenheim Museum, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the 9/11 Memorial Museum, among others.
