BiographyJosé Canops (originally Joseph Cnops, c. 1734-1814) was from Liège in Limburg, then a German territory. He emigrated to Paris initially and then came to Madrid to run the royal carpentry workshops. He is first mentioned in the Royal ledgers in 1759. Most of his work was done for the Spanish crown. Most of his known furniture is today part of the Patrimonio Nacional in Madrid. In the US, only the collections in San Francisco (Legion of Honor, inv. 1926.99, rolltop desk) and Brooklyn (inv. 57.179, hanging cabinet) have works by Canops.
