Gaetano GandolfiItalian, 1734 - 1802
Gaetano Gandolfi (1734-1802) is commonly regarded as one of the greatest painters of the Italian Settecento. A member of a Bolognese family of painters that included his older brother Ubaldo (1728-81), he was active in the second half of the 18th century as a painter of private devotional pictures such as his Saint Camillo of Lellis Adoring a Crucifixion, monumental altarpieces and wall paintings for churches, frescoed decorations for palaces, portraits, and allegorical and history works. He was a gifted draftsman as well. Gaetano traveled to Venice in 1760 as well as Paris and London in 1788; otherwise he remained in Bologna.
