Giles Bettison

Australian, born 1966
BiographyGiles Bettison was born in 1966 in Adelaide, Australia. In 1996, he received his BA in visual arts from the Canberra School of Art at the Australian National University. While still a student at Canberra, Bettison completed residencies at the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA; the Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; and the Alessi Design Workshop, Sydney, NSW, Australia. Bettison trained in complex fused mosaic techniques with glass artist Klaus Moje. Although he enjoyed the working process, Bettison felt limited in terms of “graphic possibilities,” leading him to create a contemporary variation on the traditional murrine technique. Bettison has been using this technique for over two decades to depict abstractions of Australian landscapes, skylines, and shorelines.

Bettison is a recipient of the South Australian Living Artists Award and the Urban Glass Award For New Talent, among others. His work is featured in public collections including the Musée de Design et D’Arts Appliqués Contemporains, Lausanne, Switzerland; the Corning Museum of Glass, New York, NY; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia.
