Label TextRobert Henri first discovered Monhegan Island off the Maine coast in the summer of 1903, while visiting at Boothbay Harbor. Henri was so taken with the landscape and the dramatically changing weather that he planned to build a studio there, but never did. In September 1911, on his second trip to Monhegan, he painted this canvas of Cathedral Woods, so-called because of the trees arching over the winding pathways.Published ReferencesHenri, R., Record Book G, (collection of Mrs. John LeClair, Glen Gardner, N.J.), p. 3, entry dated Sept. 1911.
