Label TextA close friend of artist Édouard Manet, Henri Fantin-Latour had social and professional ties with the Impressionists, though he pursued a different artistic path. Best known for his lush floral still lifes, he also painted portraits throughout his career, many of them depicting his friends and family members. This sober portrait is of his sister Marie, who married a Russian officer in 1866, at which time she moved to St. Petersburg.Published References"Accessions," Art Quarterly, Winter, 1956, p. 421.
