DescriptionThis vertical view of Venice depicts a flattened vertical perspective of the church of Santa Maria della Salute along the Grand Canal. Gondolas, sailing ships, and a three-masted steamship all intermingle in the background. In the foreground are additional sailboats and gondolas. Along the quay are several groups of sketchily drawn figures and Whistler’s butterfly monogram.
