Label TextThe view of Venice painted on this plate is after a 1735 engraving by Antonio Visentini. The engraving copies an oil painting by Canaletto (Antonio Canal), entitled The Grand Canal Looking South-west from the Rialto to Ca’ Foscari, of 1725–26. The plate is probably part of the set commissioned by Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1720 –1794) during his Grand Tour of Italy.Published ReferencesChristie's London, Important British and Continental Ceramics and Glass Including Meissen Porcelain from The Royal House of Saxony, December 18, 2006, lot 47.
