Exhibition HistoryTMA, Word Play (October 16, 2009- February 7, 2010)Label TextDuring the 1960s, Robert Cottingham built on the work of Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, with whom he shared a background in advertising. Warhol's use of commercial processes in his paintings and prints offered Cottingham a useful paradigm with its promotion of an aesthetic of slick, flawless surfaces and direct subject matter. Cottingham removes all environmental context, and yet we easily read style and meaning in the image.
