Label TextPlantin revived an interest in illustrated boots in the Low Countries. His earliest books contained woodcuts, as in this book, but he later used engravings for title pages and illustrations. He commissioned the leading Dutch and Flemish artists to make the illustrations, but his editions could never surpass the distinguished elegance of the best French books. Nevertheless, they were widely sold and popular. The series of little emblem books (picture books that conveyed a literary message or moral; the illustrations were accompied by a motto or verse) ran into some 50 editions. The 'Emblemata of Hadrianus Iunius' is among the most attractive of the series.
