Label TextElegant and luxurious, this French chandelier holds 36 lights on 24 arms radiating out from the center in tiers. It would have been lit by gaslight. The gilded bronze motifs of palmettes, acanthus leaves, rosettes, and olive leaf sprays are adapted from ancient Greek and Roman art. These classical elements are joined by a band of malachite, which was associated with Russia, for a touch of exoticism.Published ReferencesReich, Paula, Inspired Giving: The Apollo Society 25th Anniversary Exhibition, Toledo Museum of Art, 2011, p. 31, repr.
