Label TextIn 1625, Frederik Hendrik (1584-1647) of the House of Orange was elected Stadholder (administrator and military leader) of most of the Dutch Republic. That same year, he married German countess Amalia von Solms (1602-1672). These carved rock crystal portraits of the couple are based on silver medallions executed in 1626, which were in turn based on earlier engravings after painted portraits. The silver medallions and these plaques were likely executed to celebrate both Frederik Hendrik’s election as Stadholder and his marriage.about 1785 (Frame about 1820)
