Label TextAn expensive household luxury, this brass chandelier is engraved around the ball with three names and the year: Pieter Harmense * Michiel Harmense * Maerten Dirckse * Anno 1662. The names may represent the men who commissioned or owned the chandelier. The chandelier was recently cleaned by the Museum’s conservation team in a three-step process that involved removing the old, discolored lacquer, reducing surface tarnish with a pH-adjusted cleaning solution, and applying a fresh lacquer coat to all surfaces. The treatment took more than 80 hours and required completely dismantling and reassembling the chandelier—a total of 60 pieces.
