Label TextSeven feet tall, 3 ½ feet wide and made up of 2,102 pieces of glass, this dazzling chandelier must have originally hung in a sumptuous interior. The 20 lights in two tiers would have been lit by candlelight, which was refracted and reflected by the facets of the cut glass. Such chandeliers were prohibitively expensive to buy and maintain, so many households would simply hire them for parties, at a fee of about 10% of their value. Perry & Co. was the most successful maker of chandeliers in London, furnishing the country houses and assembly rooms of mid-19th-century upper-class Victorian society.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Inspired Giving: The Apollo Society 25th Anniversary Exhibition, October 15, 2010-February 13, 2011, p. 30, repr. (col.) p. 30.
