Label TextWith a twinkle in his eye and a raise of his glass, this jovial man seems to invite us to join him in a drink. He may represent one of the many jesters or “fools” of the Spanish court, a common theme of paintings by Diego Velázquez and his followers. Bringing a lively naturalism to his work, Velázquez painted scenes from history, mythology, the Bible, and everyday life, but he became primarily a portrait painter. He was made painter to King Philip IV of Spain in 1623 at the age of 24. He remained attached to the court for the rest of his life, even attaining a knighthood in 1659—the first Spanish painter so honored.Published References
