Label TextAlthough no candles burn today in this pair of candelabra, one can imagine what a sight it was to see these ornate pieces illuminating an elegant salon at the close of the 18th century. Draped like Greek goddesses, the figures each hold a wreath of roses with one hand, while the other balances a gilded basket of fruits and flowers out of which “grow” four floral candlestick holders. The figures are inspired by a design by François Rémond (1747–1812), a successful and prolific bronze gilder who was patronized by the French court. Rémond’s design was in turn influenced by the work of sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot (1743–1809), who had been director of the sculpture studio of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory. Like the decorative pedestals on which they rest, the candelabra showcase the classically-inspired taste of the period.Comparative ReferencesSee also Samoyault, J.P., Musée national du Chateau de Fontainebleau, catalogue des collections de Mobilier, Pendules et bronzes d’ameublement entres sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 1989, no. 132, p. 155.
