DescriptionMissing: lower right corner; Extensive gilding and polychromy: gold (traces of flower patterns in the background, hair, beards, along the hems, gable), green? (lining of the garments), red (gable).

Label TextBy 1250, Paris had become the major center of ivory carving in Europe. It maintained this status for over a century. Masterfully carved, this ivory plaque was originally part of a diptych, a two-winged, hinged shrine used for private Christian devotion. Its imagery perfectly exemplifies an important new direction in late medieval culture: the exploration and expression of human emotion.
