Label Text"After an introduction to the Everglades… I became acutely aware of the serious problems that face our world. That experience triggered a study of environmental issues that has led to the use of imagery that speaks to how the human hand of invention has altered our environment." With the Everglades shore in the background, two birds (an Anhinga and a White-faced Ibis), an alligator, a raccoon, and a striped snake emerge from a small cube decorated with relief forms. Such work is typical for Ellen Lanyon—realistically rendered subjects set in fantastical and surreal contexts. Lanyon’s images of the Everglades, a vast region of subtropical wetlands in southern Florida, reference her concerns with ecological balance and the interconnectedness of all life on earth.
