Label TextPrinted from nine lithographic stones and one plate onto custom-made Mitsumatashi paper, this lithograph continues Kiki Smith’s exploration of the body as an expressive vehicle, a subject she turned to after the death of her sister from AIDS in 1988. The print is based on three casts of the artist’s face and hair (made with dental casting powder and rubber spray), which were transferred to the lithographic stones. Smith then xeroxed her hair to create motifs to transfer to the stones and ran a curly Cher wig through the press. Although the resulting image appears abstract, it is, in fact, a self-portrait.Exhibition HistoryTMA show, August 16-November 8.1999
