Label TextIt is generally believed that the printing of etched plates began in Germany, probably in the workshop of Daniel Hopfer. Etching on iron or steel plates, as this print was, allowed for the printing of a large edition. The etched or engraved lines in soft copper plates soon wore out resulting in far fewer impressions. Many of Hopfer’s plates depict unusual religious subjects, often with lengthy passages of scripture in German (rather than Latin) allowing access to the literate German. These etchings betray sympathy with the Protestant Reformation that was encroaching upon the imperial Catholic stronghold of Ausburg, where Hopfer worked, in the 1520s.Published ReferencesBartsch VIII. 481.31, I/II.Exhibition HistoryThe Passion and the Apocalypse: Albrecht Dürer's Renaissance, Oct 1,04 - Jan 2,05
