Published ReferencesBartsch 37, i.Exhibition HistoryThe Passion and the Apocalypse: Albrecht Dürer's Renaissance, Oct 1,04 - Jan 2,05 TMA The Painter Was a Printmaker: June 23 - Sept. 9, 1984Label TextBy the age of 14, Lucas van Leyden was considered a master engraver. He had a career that lasted 25 years during which he produced about 75 engravings. Only he can be said to have challenged Dürer’s preeminence in the field of engraving throughout the first two decades of the 16th century. He was the first internationally known printmaker to emerge in the Netherlands. This print is an excellent example of his work at the height of his powers. Take time to look at the variety of detail, especially the facial types.
