The rarity of good impressions can be explained by technique. Van Leyden incised his plates with shallow strokes, thus they were quickly worn out under the pressure of the printing press. He also apparently destroyed inferior copies. This print, from late in his career, shows the influence of Italian engravings.- Works on Paper
