Label TextThis is a late edition impression of one of Manet’s objective manner prints. It is derived from a painting of the same subject in the Camondo collection, Louvre, and mimics well the rich tonality present in the painting. Unlike the etching style of boldly etched lines used in Philip IV (shown nearby), this print features a dense network of lightly etched lines. This hatching, along with the addition of a coating of aquatint, creates a subtle area of shading that surrounds the figure. This modulated area of tonality is very reminiscent of the aquatint work seen in Goya’s prints nearby. Lola de Valence was a Spanish dancer, the leading lady in a troupe that performed in Paris in 1862.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, About Face, Sept. 30 - Dec.31, 2005.
