Label TextEarly Morning, Battersea is Whistler’s most atmospheric etching from 1861. It is the first work in which Whistler tried to capture the effect of dawn found in the woodblock prints of Japanese artists Hiroshige and Hokusai. The pale forms and shadows create a mysterious scene. The nocturnes that Whistler produced in the early 1870s owe a great deal to this print.Exhibition HistoryAbove Water: Bridges from the Collection July 20 - Oct. 21 2007.
