Label TextIn this print of a workman with a small glimpse of the Thames River through the doorway in the background, Whistler used a rhythmic juxtaposition of light and dark, creating a sequence of receding spaces. Broad spaces are contrasted with narrow ones; open with closed; light with dark. All of these devices are used to carry the eye around the picture plane, into the hidden recesses, and eventually, through the building to the scene of the river.Exhibition HistoryTMA, American Art in the Time of Homer, November 26, 2008 - January 25, 2009.
