Label TextLittle is known about J. Pascal Sébah’s early life or his ultimate demise. It is known that he opened a photography studio in Constantinople, Turkey by 1868—some sources suggest an opening date as early as 1857— where he primarily produced photos for tourists. From 1860 through 1890 he spent a good deal of time in Egypt, photographing much of the country and its material culture. The original Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (the first mosque in Egypt) was built 1,368 years ago. The mosque has been rebuilt numerous times and very little remains of its original structure today. This photograph was taken about the time the mosque was last rebuilt in 1875.- Works on Paper
