Toledo Museum of Art, Refraction/Reflection, April 20-September 2, 2012.Label TextJean (Juan) Laurent was one of the most important photographers working in Spain in the 19th century. He was largely responsible for creating an international vision of the Iberian Peninsula in the 1800s. Born in Garchizy, France, Laurentmoved to Spain in the 1840s,, changing his name to Juan. Laurent opened a photographic studio in Madrid in 1856. With the help of studio assistants he created a body of work that showed the multi-cultural heritage of Spain in romantic, light-infused albumen prints like this image of the Alhambra palace. The Court of Lions is the main court of the Palace of Lions, in the heart of the Alhambra, the medieval Moorish citadel formed by a complex of palaces, gardens, and forts in Granada, Spain- Works on Paper
