Most of them were preparatory designs or ideas for two murals La guerre el la paix Picasso painted prior to 1954 for the chapel at Vallauris. This document of Picasso's use of his art to denounce war harkens back to his atistic protests of the 1930s, most notably Guernica and Dreams and Lies of Franco. Each deluxe copy of this book was issued with a lithograph depicting a victorious warrior (whose shield is decorated with the dove of peace) brandishing his sword over a cowering minotaur.
